Service Opportunities In School

Through service, Christians put their faith to work. OLPH students find plenty of opportunities to actively practice their faith during the year. Specifically, students serve in these ways:

Seventh and Eighth Grades: School Service. Junior high students have occasional opportunities to assist teachers in executing school events. At Fun Fair, junior high students volunteer to run some of the carnival booths for the younger children. Select seventh graders are also asked to assist at the eighth grade graduation ceremony or during setup for the graduation banquet.

Eighth Grade: Confirmation Service. In preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, our eighth grade candidates are obligated to explore service opportunities in our OLPH parish and outside our community, such as Catholic Charities, Greater Chicago Food Depository and Misericordia. Additionally, each student visits St. Martin de Porres House of Hope. Candidates are required to write a reflection paper about their experiences.

Kindergarten through Eighth Grades: Outreach Service. When children are asked to participate in a Thanksgiving nonperishable food drive, a Christmas mitten collection, or a Lenten peanut butter and jelly drive, they deliver. The school encourages children to save their own money and purchase items for those less fortunate. Some homerooms sponsor raffles or bake sales to raise money for the needy in addition to ongoing school efforts.
