Warrior Boys and Girls Repeat as Council II-3A Bball Champs!

In Council II-3A playoff action over the weekend at Loyola Academy, the OLPH Warrior basketball teams managed to defend their titles despite entering their respective championship games as underdogs.
Coaches Tony Belmont and Kerry Durham first led the 8th grade girl’s team to a narrow 25-23 victory over the #2 seed, St. Francis Xavier, on Friday night at Regina Dominican High School. In the finals at Loyola on Sunday, the team quickly found themselves down 14-4 after one quarter to the number one seed, Sacred Heart Winnetka. Despite the early deficit, the team fought back with some suffocating defense and earned a hard-fought 32-28 victory. The title game victory avenged two regular season losses to the Vikings of Sacred Heart.

In the boy’s Ignatius Division, Coach Joe Daly’s 8th grade boy’s team also atoned for two earlier losses to Evanston’s Pope John XXIII, by holding on for a thrilling 46-42 victory. The Warriors jumped up early with a 7-0 lead, only to see the Panthers take a slim fourth quarter lead. With some timely baskets and clutch free throws, they were able to retake the lead and hold on to repeat as League champs.
